2027 SC African American History Calendar Celebrates Service and Sacrifice

The strength of a nation is measured not only by its achievements, but by the character of those who answer the call to serve. Across generations, African Americans with South Carolina ties have demonstrated extraordinary courage, leadership, and sacrifice in military service, public life, education, faith, health care, and civic leadership.

The 2027 African American History Calendar, Service & Sacrifice: From South Carolina to the Nation, celebrates these individuals and the lasting impact of lives devoted to the service of others.

The 2027 calendar was unveiled this evening at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia. Released as our nation concludes the commemoration of its 250th birthday, this year's edition reminds us that the American story did not end with our founding. Each generation has been called to advance the promise of liberty and extend its blessings to others, often at great personal cost.

The Cover
The 2027 calendar cover features Major James Capers Jr., USMC (Ret.), a Bishopville native, pioneering Force Reconnaissance Marine, Vietnam War veteran, and 2026 Medal of Honor recipient whose life embodies the theme of service and sacrifice.

Student Essay Contest
As part of the calendar's educational mission, students across South Carolina are invited to participate in a statewide essay contest that encourages them to explore how lives of service and sacrifice can influence future generations.

This year's essay prompt asks students:
"How can service to others create opportunities that extend beyond one generation? Use examples from one or more 2027 South Carolina African American History Calendar honorees to support your response."

What They’re Saying
"The men and women highlighted in this year's calendar walked different paths and answered different callings, but all were united in serving others. Through education, we strive to help students understand not only what happened in the past, but who made that history possible. By learning the stories of these exemplary South Carolinians, students gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices that expanded opportunity for future generations and a clearer understanding of their own responsibility to lead, serve, and contribute to their communities." -- State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver

About the Calendar
First established in 1989, the 12-month calendar profiles individuals from across the state who have had a positive, compelling impact on South Carolina and, often, across the country.

Thousands of calendars are printed and distributed to schools to shine a light on South Carolina's extraordinarily rich African American history. The biographies and timeline of important dates printed in the calendar are also preserved online and thanks to accompanying lesson plans, are used by educators from across the state in classroom instruction.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the sponsors whose support made this year's calendar possible: Dominion Energy, South Carolina ETV, WIS TV, Columbia Praise Radio, and Brookland Baptist Church.

The 2027 calendar is available online and members of the public can download the calendar electronically or submit orders for hard copies.
