AU Warns of Worsening Developments in Ethiopia

(MENAFN) The head of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has voiced serious alarm over worsening developments in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, issuing a call for “maximum restraint” following reports of suspended flights and growing instability.

His appeal comes as concern mounts among activists and political groups in Tigray, who are urging swift action to prevent a renewed outbreak of violence. According to reports, fears are spreading that the fragile calm in the region could soon unravel.

In an open letter addressed to international mediators, the opposition group Salsay Woyane cautioned that Tigray is facing an “imminent and catastrophic collapse” of its delicate peace.

The party urged immediate diplomatic engagement between Ethiopia’s federal authorities and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, warning that failure to act could lead to what it described as a “preventable disaster.”

Recent developments have added to these concerns. Reports indicate that the security situation shifted on Thursday when Ethiopian Airlines suddenly halted all regular flights to the regional capital, Mekelle, as well as to Axum, Shire, and Humera, citing “unplanned circumstances.”

At the same time, reports have pointed to renewed fighting in the Tselemti area of western Tigray, a highly sensitive zone that has remained volatile even after the official end of the civil war.

Responding to the situation, the African Union reiterated its position in a statement, saying: “The chairperson calls upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from actions that could undermine confidence, and resolve all outstanding issues through constructive dialogue, in full adherence to the obligations and spirit of the Permanent COHA.”

The latest tensions are widely seen as a critical challenge to the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA), which was signed in Pretoria in November 2022 and has served as the foundation for maintaining peace in the region since the end of the conflict.
